Austin is a place that is living up to its “Keep Austin Weird” city slogan. This is because it has a very unique place, a public park where swimming and relaxing in the nude is not prohibited. Such place is known as the Hippie Hollow Park.
Hippie Hollow Park is located northwest of Austin and is a breathtaking expanse of limestone cliffs sitting on the shores of Lake Travis. This park was originally known as the McGregor County Park. It is the only public park in the whole Texas State wherein clothing is regarded legally as an optional choice.
Hippie Hollow Park has long been used for nude swimming since the 1960s. In the 1970s, the use of the place for bathing in the nude has earned the ire of the adjacent landowners who kept reporting nudist activities to the police. However, the sheriff’s department, which was strapped for budget, saw no real offense in simple skinny-dipping and so nudist activities were allowed as long as there are no other laws that were broken by the nudist individuals. This park used to allow families in with small children and young teens with them. But it was changed in 1995 with the passing of an ordinance restricting entry to the park to people who are only 18 years old and above.
Hippie Hollow Park is a very popular area for lesbians and gays and this community has been sponsoring Splash Day Events which is held bi-annually on the first Sundays of May and September.
